Understanding Multiple Budgets

Pixel Budget allows you to create and manage multiple budgets within the same account.
Think of a budget as a separate workspace or project.
Each budget has its own:
  • Accounts
  • Categories
  • Transactions
  • Goals
  • Reports
Data in one budget does not affect another budget.

What Does “Budget” Mean Here?

In Pixel Budget, the word budget does not refer to:
  • The amount you assign to a category
  • Envelope budgeting
  • Zero-based budgeting
  • Monthly planning
Instead, a budget is a complete financial workspace.
It is similar to:
  • Workspaces in productivity tools
  • Projects in project management apps
  • Separate company files in accounting software
The term “budget” is commonly used in personal finance applications to describe a complete financial setup. For consistency with industry standards, Pixel Budget uses the same terminology.

Why Use Multiple Budgets?

Multiple budgets are useful when you want to keep different financial contexts completely separate.
Examples:

Personal and Business Finances

  • One budget for personal finances
  • One budget for a small business or freelance activity

Different Family Members

  • One budget for household finances
  • One budget for a teenager or student

Special Projects or Events

  • A wedding budget
  • A vacation planning budget
  • A renovation budget

Financial Experiments

  • A “test” budget for trying new category structures
  • A simplified budget for long-term planning
Each budget is independent.
Switching between budgets changes your entire financial view.

What Is Shared Between Budgets?

Budgets are isolated from each other.
This means:
  • Accounts are not shared
  • Categories are not shared
  • Transactions are not shared
  • Reports are not shared
Each budget functions as a self-contained financial environment.

Important: Budgets vs. Budgeting

It is easy to confuse:
  • A budget (workspace)with
  • Budgeting (planning how much to spend)
In Pixel Budget:
  • A budget = your financial workspace
  • Budgeting = assigning planned amounts to categories
You can use Envelope Budgeting or Zero-Based Budgeting inside any budget.
Multiple budgets simply allow you to create multiple independent financial setups.

When Should You Create a New Budget?

Create a new budget when:
  • You need complete separation of finances
  • You do not want transactions to mix
  • You want independent reports and balances
If you only need additional categories or goals within the same financial setup, you do not need a new budget.

Summary

A budget in Pixel Budget is a complete financial workspace.
Multiple budgets allow you to:
  • Separate financial contexts
  • Organize different areas of your life
  • Maintain clear financial boundaries
Switching budgets is like switching to a different financial world.
